In response to the consequences of climate change, within the framework of the project Food security and reduction of the vulnerability, financed by the Italian Council of Ministers, CISP has carried out activities aimed at improving the lives of local communities.
Implemented in collaboration with the Local Risk and Disaster Management Committees as well as the local authorities, one of such activities was the development of action plans for risk and climate emergency management.
The activity helped identifying the areas most at risk and to involve the inhabitants in the creation of warning systems as well as evacuation routes and the meeting and shelter points.
Local schools have also taken part to the project activities through theatre plays, dances, songs and other cultural events aimed at informing the population about the risk of disasters.
Lastly, the locals involved in the project also distributed information material in markets, in schools and door-to-door.
Mozambique
Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the African continent. Ranked 181st out of 188 countries by Human Development Index, it is also among the most vulnerable and most affected by climate change in Southern Africa. The increase in temperatures, the unpredictability of rainfall, the increasingly frequent occurrence of devastating events such as droughts, floods and cyclones, are among the major consequences of climate change. In particular, starting from 2019 the central area of the country has been hit by extreme climatic events: cyclone IDAI (2019), tropical storm Chalane (2020), cyclone Eloise (2021) and more recently tropical storm Ana (2022) had a devastating impact on the population.
